His fortune came from The International Harvester Company. What plows will buy! Just extraordinary grounds, acre upon acre of statues, greenery, waterfront views, pools, bridges, and an effort to make it look like Venice, Italy.
The museum, his home, is again fabulously over the top ornate. With carpets, tile, furniture all perfectly set in this vast space. Viscaya is one of the greatest and grandest estates in America.
We think of such famous places as the San Simeon Castle in California or the Biltmore House in North Carolina, but Vizcaya rivals them both - not in size, the main house "only" has about 75 or 80 rooms - but in the excellance of the architecture and craftmanship. The main house is simply gorgeous and opulent and sumptuous. It is filled with priceless antiques, including ancient Roman statuary and medieval tapestries.
The formal gardens are full of statues and fountains and terraces - so don't forget to bring the camera! No wonder this was spot that was chosen by Pres. Reagan to welcome the Pope on his first trip to Miami. James Deering, the multi-millionaire who commissioned Viscaya in the early years of the 20th Century employed the best art historians, decorators and architects to create a Mediterranean Palazzo with rooms reflecting Renaissance, Baroque, Rococco, and Neo-Classical periods.
Deering's Napoleonic Empire style marble bathroom with solid gold fixtures and hardware! Best of all, the estate is situated on a bluff overlooking the aquamarine waters of Biscayne Bay.
It's breath-taking! How to get there? Opening Hours: Wednesday through Monday from am to pm. Closed on Tuesdays. The museum has tons of things to watch. The rooms, decorative art and furnishings are incredible conserve and the details are spectacular, you will really feel like living before the 19th century. The gardens are big enough to lost hours in there and they are very well maintained, it is incredible how green was everything.
All the information of each area of the house is very clear. Some of the things that I most like was the spiral staircase, several designs of the doors inside the house, the good conditions of the restroom and the stone barge which really is incredible. This place is a great spot for taking very good pictures of your trip. The house has air conditioning, so while you are inside you are not going to suffer the heat and humidity of Miami.
Bring enough water to keep hydrated. What an amazing place to explore while in Miami! The gardens and the house are simply beautiful and can't be missed during a Miami trip. Hal93 Hollywood, FL contributions. In the guidebook this historic estate was billed as a must see attraction. I think that says more about Miami's lack of decent attractions than anything else!
Unlike a previous reviewer I don't think it compares to Hearst Castle, which I found thrilling. The gardens are pleasant but cannot compare with many fabulous European estates, especially Versailles. I would say this was an intresting diversion if you're at a loss of something to do, but I wouldn't say go out of your way to see it.
DrAwkward Baltimore MD 7 contributions. I visited on an afternoon in June and there were no tours being given. So, we wandered around the house looking at it by ourselves. I have to say, I'm confused why the other writers seemed to have so much more of a better time than we did.
Is that what we were missing? All I saw was a big, old, kinda fancy house, with not much that was interesting about it. I didn't learn anything, nor was I really struck by the beauty of the house. Sad to say, there weren't many signs, so that was probably a poor decision. In summary, my recommendation would be that if there isn't a tour and you don't get a guidebook you may be quite bored by your visit. I honestly am usually much more itnerested in this kind of thing but somehow this visit was completely dull to me.
Damien S Adelaide, Australia 4, contributions. Wow to think this place has been preserved so well for nearly a years. The building, the gardens and the history are all great. The gardens have been well presented and preserved. This is a must see for people staying in Miami.

The duo imported gilded panels, carved mantels and fresco ceilings from Tuscany and France to line the villa walls.
But any trip to Vizcaya would be incomplete without a tour of its Edenic grounds. Low, trimmed shrubs organize walkways into mesmerizing, geometric patterns. Thick columns, lush mazes and classical statues also lend to its European aesthetic; but Vizcaya uniquely embraces its tropical surroundings as well.
Here, palms, rare orchids and Cuban limestone infuse the palatial Mediterranean vibe with a signature Miami flair. The sprawling Formal Gardens were designed by landscape architect Diego Suarez to feel like a great outdoor room, connecting to the main house along a North-South axis. Several architectural elements come together in one fluid, integrated space. A massive topiary-lined corridor gives way to The Mound, where The Casino pavilion provides an aerial view of the gardens.
East of The Mound lies the Fountain Garden, its centerpiece is still in working order and was imported from Sutri, Italy. Another must see on your garden tour is The David A. Klein Orchidarium , where rows of vibrant Vandas and rare Cymbidiums dangle elegantly overhead. Deering was an avid seafarer and welcomed his guests by boat as well as by car.
Just a few steps from the Yacht Landing, the swimming pool served as a refreshing remedy for a long hot day on the bay. In addition to his maritime passions, Deering had a penchant for pop-culture and enjoyed watching Charlie Chaplin films in the open-air courtyard.
