Based on the recommendation of several church members both in the city and in Iconium, Paul decides to take the young man with him as he travels preaching the gospel Acts - 3. Before this can happen, however, the apostle pays to have him circumcised verse 3.
The Bible records, after Timothy was ordained to serve by Paul and church brethren 1Timothy , 2Timothy , he ministered in at least five New Testament churches 1Thessalonians - 2, 1Corinthians , Philippians - 22, Acts and 1Timothy Timothy accompanied Paul on most of his second journey travels after he left Lystra.
Scripture then informs us he was with the apostle in Ephesus during his third missionary journey. While in the city he and a man named Erastus are sent by Paul to minister to brethren in Macedonia Acts Later on, he meets with others at Troas to accompany the apostle through Asia on his way to Jerusalem Acts - 5. Paul is imprisoned in Rome, beginning in 61 A. While he is in prison, he writes four epistles, three of which mention Timothy being with him Philippians , , Colossians , Philemon In company with Saint Paul he visited the cities of Asia Minor and Greece, once hastening on ahead as a trusted messenger, at another time lingering behind to confirm in the faith a recently founded church.
Eventually he was made the first Bishop of Ephesus; and there he received the two epistles of his master which bear his name, the first written from Macedonia and the second from Rome, where Saint Paul from his prison expresses his longing desire to see his dearly beloved son, once more, if possible, before his death. It is not certain whether Saint Timothy arrived in Rome in time, but devotion to Saint Timothy has always been strong in Rome, which seems to argue for his presence at the martyrdom of his spiritual father.
Saint Timothy was of a tender and affectionate disposition, and certainly found his role in the idolatrous city of Ephesus difficult to sustain. Paul wrote in his first letter to Timothy: "Stop drinking only water, but have a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent illnesses" 1 Timothy He tells us about their struggles so we can personally connect and identify with them, and it helps provide some perspective on our own lives.
Like other Orthodox parishes, The Good Shepherd encourages a deeper understanding of those who came before us. There is always more to learn about one another at The Good Shepherd. We know that our Subdeacon gives us weekly insights into the feasts and saints of the Orthodox calendar, but who among us knows why Subdeacon Timothy chose St Timothy as his patron saint? It was the name my parents gave me as a child. Like St Timothy, I struggled as a young person with shyness and timidity.
He cautioned him also about false prophets and commanded him not to lay his hand on one in haste but only after thorough examinations and testing. Paul called Timothy his son and his beloved. Timothy delivered four epistles for St. Paul: the first was the Epistle to Corinth, the second to Philippi, the third to Thessalonica, and the fourth to the Hebrews.
Timothy shepherded the flock of Christ extremely well, and he illumined minds by his teachings, instructions, and admonitions. He continued to rebuke the Jews and the Greeks, therefore they envied him and congregated against him and started beating him until he was martyred in the city of Ephesus.
The believers took his body and buried it.
