I have read in several articles there is some confusion on the issue. I understood that Ord Dept assigned a block of serial number for use on A4s not realizing that Remington production had already passed those numbers and they had been used. No fancy computers to keep track of things. Keeping track of the enormous war time production and war supplies down to shoe strings had to be a PITA back then.
