Should i fill gaps between floorboards

An additional advantage of Stopgap is that once it has been fitted the natural shadow of the gap itself will make it almost invisible to the eye ensuring that the natural finish of your floor is not in any way compromised. We have heard many other suggestions for filling floorboard gaps and have tried most of them.

Papier Mache for example sounds like a great idea but you may have to take a couple of months off work to do it! Although a very time consuming job, it can be done quite cheaply as all you need is some wallpaper adhesive and some old news papers. As you might imagine, this does not give a great finish and due to this would not be suitable for room spaces where you want to show off your flooring but it can be used in rooms where you are going to cover the floors with carpet or lino etc…. Using PVA Glue and Sawdust If you are in the process of sanding and re-finishing your floor, after the initial sanding you should save as much sawdust as possible in a container you can apply a layer of PVA adhesive to the gap. Diagram of a filled floorboard Push the sawdust down into the PVA so it is level with the top of the board. Wooden Strips This will need to be done before you sand your floor!

I like the way the previous people have highlighted the architecture, although not the colour! I would paint the cornicing and rose a couple of shades darker than the ceiling so to highlight it. I would firstly decide if you want a light or dark scheme.

If light, what way does the room face in terms of light as its best to work with the light for paint colour. You could also paint or paper the chimney breast or alcoves to highlight the chimney. I'm not keen on the mid length curtains so depending on design style you could go full length, Roman blinds or shutters. I agree, there would originally have been just one cast iron spindle per stair. It's a shame that the 'bullnoses' have been cut back but if it was all sanded down and painted or varnished to blend in I don't think it would look wrong at all.

The alternative is to get a joiner to make up bullnose profile pieces to attach to the end of each tread, but you'd have to paint them as the wood wouldn't match the original. Replacing every tread would cost a fortune.

The banister rail will sand down with a bit of hard work and probably be a nice piece of wood underneath that you can varnish. It'll look lovely once it's done, you'll have to post 'after' picture for us!
