Patent Knotting solution is a professional shellac-based solution for sealing knots and resinous areas of bare timber prior to the application of paints, waxes or polishes. Knotting solution can really only hold back extractive staining, from knots and resinous areas of timber bleeding through the paint coating film. Wood knots weaken wood strength. This is a primer-undercoat that seals the resin in the knots, so you can miss out the knotting-solution stage altogether.
It goes on easily and is a quick-drying, low-odour paint. On bare wood, two coats are usually enough. The topcoat—whether gloss, satin or eggshell finish—adds texture rather than colour, so add a third layer of undercoat for full coverage if needed. Much like rusty nails, unsightly stains often occur after a wood knot has been painted.
